Samson, shorn and blinded, strains beneath the heavy beam of a prison mill while Philistine onlookers stand near the grinding stone. The scene portrays the aftermath of Delilah’s betrayal, when the mighty judge of Israel is taken captive, his eyes put out, and his strength reduced to forced labor in Gaza. The millstone becomes a symbol of humiliation and bondage, showing the consequences of Samson’s covenant-breaking and misplaced confidence. Yet the biblical account also points toward mercy: even in captivity, Samson’s hair begins to grow again, preparing the way for one final act of judgment against the Philistines. This artwork is well suited for teaching on Judges 16, sin and consequence, repentance, spiritual captivity, and God’s sovereign use of broken servants.
