Moses, dressed in the royal garments of Egypt, raises his hand to stop two Hebrew men locked in a heated quarrel near the fields of Egypt. The pyramids in the distance and the prince’s staff place the moment within the land of Pharaoh, while the struggling men reveal the unrest among Moses’ own people. This artwork portrays the scene in Exodus 2, when Moses, after defending an oppressed Hebrew, encounters two Hebrews fighting and asks, “Why do you strike your companion?” The event exposes Moses as a mediator before he becomes the deliverer of Israel. His attempted peacemaking foreshadows his later calling to stand between God, Pharaoh, and the covenant people, revealing both his zeal for justice and the tension of his divided identity as an Egyptian-raised Hebrew.
